Tartan is synonymous with Scotland and was found in the region as early as the third century AD however similar designs were present across Europe in ancient times. For a variety of reasons tartan was to gain a far greater cultural significance in Scotland than elsewhere.
Contrary to popular belief tartans were not originally associated with particular clans or regions. The cloths were hand woven and locally sourced and this may have led to distinctive patterns that were peculiar to certain areas. Tartan was a popular fabric and by the 17th century was a characteristic of highland dress. In the 19th century tartan was being produced commercially and in greater volumes and so it became necessary to standardise patterns and colours. Designs were given names purely to identify them but this practice seems to have led to the tartans being associated with particular clans and regiments.
This relationship was further reinforced when King George IV visited Scotland in 1822. Clan chiefs were ordered to wear their tartans, which was amusing as many did not have one or at least did not know what theirs was! They were forced to adopt a pattern for the royal visit and the clans relationships with these patterns were carried forward. It is now traditional for people to wear the tartans with which they have an association.
The Black Watch
The Black Watch is an elite Scottish military regiment with a history dating back to the 18th century. The precise history of the tartan now associated with the Black Watch is unclear but there is evidence to suggest that an almost identical pattern was worn from the outset. The tartan is also known as the Government Tartan.
