Flat caps are traditionally soft rounded caps with a stiff brim at the front. They are known by many other names including the golf cap, cabbies cap, and even the cheese-cutter but they mainly known as the flat cap. Generally made from materials such as tweed, leather and other wools they were originally found in northern Britain but are now worn worldwide.
One of the reasons that the flat cap became such a staple piece of head wear in Britain, was due to the 1571 legislation that stated any male over the age of six years had to wear a woollen cap on Sundays and holidays. This was a way of boosting the wool trade and trying to help the economy. The upper classes were excused from this legislation and it was eventually repealed in 1597. However, by that time, the woollen hats and flat caps were very much a part of British men's clothing and the style has continued on till today.
Flat caps are now worn by all types of people from royalty and celebrities to fashion students and dog walkers. They can be worn to create a certain look or achieve a style or can be used for more practical reasons such as keeping your head warm when out in the country. Whichever reason you choose for donning a British flat cap, you can choose your favourite colour and style from our wonderful selection of men's hats here at Amor Cashmere & Tweed.
