Magee Tweed
Magee is a family run Irish business, established in 1866 and built around real heritage. They create distinctive clothing, with fabrics inspired by the rich tapestry of the Donegal seas and landscapes.
Magee of Donegal is a highly respected label with an impressive history that dates back to 1866. John Magee began by opening a small shop in Donegal where he sold tailored clothing fashioned from the highest quality clothes. Initially these fabrics were bought in Magee then began commissioning local weavers to produce new designs especially for his shop. The new clothes were wonderfully soft and featured appealing designs with lovely colours that soon attracted attention.
Today weavers still use traditional methods to fashion fine tweeds for Magee of Donegal. Tweed is a durable cloth which originated in Scotland. The fabric was used to make clothes for farmers and estate workers but when the English nobility began travelling to Scotland and buying up estates there they soon started wearing tweed themselves. The cloth's association with wealthy estate owners saw to it that tweed soon became the thing to wear!
Tweed features a diagonal weave or twill and it is an extremely durable, insulating, breathable and water repellent material making it both a practical and stylish choice whatever the occasion. These days, of course, the Magee range features many different quality fabrics and styles but all with the same attention to detail and expert tailoring as the original Magee clothing.
At Amor Cashmere and Tweed we are pleased to bring you a fine selection of Magee of Donegal clothing including tweed gilets, moleskin and cord trousers and quality shirts. Classic styling runs through the collection which boasts heritage values and timeless appeal. Magee of Donegal is certainly still a label to be seen in!
