Smith was the name given to those who were skilled in the process of extracting precious metals from ores and fashioning into everything from swords to ploughshares. Many of these adept in the art of metalworking became hereditary smiths for Highland clans, and in the Highlands they were known as 'Gow'. They were also members of the mighty confederation of clans known as Clan Chattan.
