An ancient clan that traces its descent from a knight of Flanders known as Berowald, who was granted lands of Innes, in the parish of Urquhart, in Moray, in the twelfth century by Malcolm IV.The clan prospered not only through its loyalty to the Stewarts, but through a number of important marriage alliances. Sir Robert Innes, the 20th Chief was made a Baronet in 1625
